The majority
of our guests have been awestruck by their visit to Kilauea Volcano
(just a 40-45 minute drive from our Hilo properties) and many have
told us it should be listed as one of the Wonders of the World.
Do not go home without at least visiting Volcano National Park.
Here you can enjoy breathtaking vistas and ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs,
walk by spewing steam vents and walk through lava craters and giant
lava tubes (all of our properties have flash lights so be sure to
take them with you), stroll through lush rain forests or chose one
of many hiking trails. Plan to pack a lunch in the coolers you will
find in all our rentals. This park has so much to see and do that
you will want to spend at least one entire day here.
Active
Volcano: Kilauea Volcano is the only Hawaii volcano currently
erupting in the Hawaiian Islands. Most of the eruption has occurred
within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The lava flows either
to the surface, or through lava tubes reaching into the ocean.
Guests visiting Volcanoes National Park are able to witness new
land added to the island of Hawaii. According to the USGS, 540
acres of new land has been created, 8 miles of highway has been
covered by lava, and 189 structures have been destroyed. The USGS
reports the current eruption makes Kilauea the most destructive
impact on people since 1790. At the same time, new land and awesome
flows have millions of people to experience the activity up close.
Over the past 10 years, the volcano has flowed mostly within the
Volcano National Park, and has not presented danger to nearby
communities.
Safe Viewing
& More Information: Drop by the National Park
Services and pick up information on safe viewing. Maps showing
the Visitor's Center, Kilauea Outlook, Jagger Museum, Mauna Ulu,
Thurston Lava Tube, and Holei Sea Arch (current eruption site
at end of Chain of Craters Road), and restroom facilities throughout
the Park are included in the Guest Binders inside each house.
Additional copies can be picked up at the Ranger's Station. The
USGS in conjunction with the National Park Service publishes information
on Viewing Safety, the Eruption of Kilauea from 1983 to present,
and other important and interesting information. We try to include
as much volcano information as possible in each of the Hawaii
vacation rental homes.
To watch lava
pouring into the sea and enlarging our island is an incredible sight
at any time of day but to see it at night defies description. Many
of our guests visit the volcano park during the days, walk through
the lava tube, see the crater, and vents, then return to the house
for a nap or a swim, then pack flashlights and coolers and return
back to the Volcano National Park at night to watch the lava flow.
From the fingers of fire creeping down the mountain to the explosive
entry of molten lava into the cooling sea, the scene you will witness
is ever changing and the "fireworks" are undoubtedly far superior
to anything you have ever seen before.
Some comments
about the Volcano National Park from our guests:
"Thank
you for providing such a splendid vacation home. We appreciated
how clean and well equipped the house was, and appreciated all
the extras you provided. In one word, OUTSTANDING! We spent the
majority of our days rotating between the beach, and the Volcano.
We agreed that we could have spent a week touring the Volcano
Park. On the second day we saw "Pele's Hair" as the
lava exploded into the ocean. What a sight! It will be difficult
to stay away. We plan to return next year, and will call you this
month to re-book our stay at the beach house. Mahalo! Jan &
Dean and kids" San Diego, CA
"The
highlight of this trip was the volcano! This was our first trip
to Hawaii, and we're so glad we stayed at the Mango house. It's
a lovely home, and very well located to the Volcano Park. We noticed
it rained a lot more at the volcano than it did at the house,
but could just not get enough. We took several volcano movies
to share with the family back home. After experiencing the volcano,
we even felt a little guilty about not bringing the kids. Expect
us to return this summer with the whole family in tow! Ben and
Alicia" Huntsville, AL
"What
a great trip! Thank for all the Volcano information, and also
for convincing us to go. We were having so much fun swimming with
all turtles at the beach, we would have missed the volcano entirely!.
Now that we are home, we keep talking about our magical volcano
memories. I can't get over how much new land was created. Amazing.
We loved the Beaches house... it's absolutely to die for! Many
alohas, Tammie, Mark, Melissa & Codie" Seattle, WA
