Richardson
beach is excellent for swimming, snorkeling, boogie boarding,
or surfing. This beach is rarely crowded, and is mentioned
in many of the guidebooks as the most family friendly of Hilo's
beaches. Good for children and adults. Lifeguard on duty daily,
showers, restrooms, and grassy park and picnic area.

The
Hilo bay, along Hilo's Keaukaha shoreline, is laced with bays,
inlets, lagoons, and grassy beach parks with picnic tables,
lifeguards, showers and restrooms. Richardson and Leleiwi
beaches are located adjacent to each other, and are excellent
for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The best surfing is
beyond the enclosed cove at Richardson beach. These Hawaii
beaches are far less crowded than other Big Island beaches,
and offer great family fun all year round.

Onekahakaha
children's beach is located adjacent to Leleiwi beach in the
Hilo Bay. Picnic tables, showers, and lifeguard on duty. Shallow
bay protected from waves by large boulders around the perimeter
of the beach area. This beach has white sand and warm water.
Perfect for very young children, or for kids just learning
to swim.

The
Hilo Bay offers great scuba diving with equipment rentals
in nearby downtown Hilo. Richardson beach, in front of this
house, is one of the easiest shoreline access points for scuba
diving.

Some
of the best snorkeling in east Hawaii is at Richardson and
Leleiwi beaches in Hilo Bay. Located right in front of the
Hawaii Vacation Rentals: Beaches, Surfrider, and Lilikoi houses.
Turtles frequent these beaches, and are a common sighting.

Walk
along the seashore and explore the shallow ponds, lagoons,
tidepools and inlets that line the Hilo bay. Great exploration
around the bend past black sand entrance to Richardson beach.

Pana'ewa
Zoo in Hilo has free admission. Home to a white Bengal tiger,
12 acres of animals, reptiles and birds, including the endangered
owl, Hawaiian goose, Colobus monkeys, pygmy hippo, two toed
sloths, iguanas, lemurs, and butterfly house. Petting zoo.

Touring
by car north of Hilo along the historic Hamakua coastline
boasts scenic ocean views, waterfalls, flowers and native
plants in route to Waimea or Kona. Outstanding waterfalls
and botanical gardens are located in Hilo, and also north
of Hilo.

on the smooth black sand at Richardson beach. Vacation rental
homes are equipped with beach towels, snorkeling equipment,
